Castile soap, such as Zote is fairly alkaline. That's part of what makes it such a good cleaning ingredient. But yes, it will just cake on if you don't do anything to remove it. Which is why anyone who actually wants homemade detergent to work will use 2 rinse cycles and some vinegar to break up the soap and thus make the clothes actually clean.
